Get Good Grades - Using Goal Setting
Picture this in your mind - it is the the middle of the ocean, it is the middle of the day and all you can see is ocean, ocean and more ocean. You have been down to the control room of your ship and the GPS is out, you did not bring a compass. You have no idea where you are. Which direction do you point now to get to the nearest land? Do you head off in one direction to realize it was wrong and you need to somehow return? It is all very hit and miss. Not the way to sail through life at all.
If you want to get good grades at school then this can not be you. The same thing will happen, you will go along to your classes, do the tests, assignments and examinations - sometimes you may do well, other times not so well. You need to set clear goals if you want to be successful at school.
You see most teens believe that your success at school lies in doing more homework, spending greater hours studying - yes it will help but it is not the deciding factor that will determine your success. The secret to your success at school and to whether you get good grades is what you put your attention on. It all comes down to your thoughts.
Let me explain what I mean - you see what happens to you on a daily basis is a consequence of what you have been focusing your thoughts on. If you are continually focusing on the difficulty of school then guess what it will be difficult. If you have been focusing on failing a test then guess what you have probably failed tests. You see your reality, your life is determined by what you focus your thoughts on. Its that simple.
You have two parts to your mind - a conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the the part that you use in class to do a maths problem and the subconscious mind is like a huge storeroom that has every thought and experience from your life and it retrieves those thoughts when it needs them. For instance, when did you last really think about how to get dressed or tie your shoe laces? Not for a long while because your subconscious mind has stored this process over and over again and now it is instantly retrieved and you do not need to think about it. This is a really powerful factor if used properly. What happens though if you do not get good grades and have difficulty at school? It is most likely because you have programmed your subconscious and no matter what you do now - you get the same results.
The question I am sure you are asking now is - that's all great but what can I do to change it so I get good grades? I want to tell you the great news is that there are a number of different tools that you can use to start your reprogramming and I will introduce you to one in this article - Goal Setting.
The purpose of Goal Setting is determine what you want from high school so that you can continuously focus your mind on those results. For your mind to start creating your goals they need to be laser focused - not wishy washy like, I want a good grade in maths - instead it must be I want a 95% in maths at the end of 2009.
So my advice to you is stay in touch with this blog because my next post will be how to create incredibly powerful goals that will actually have you get good grades.
